Princeton Diplomatic Invitational (PDI)
Ten USP students travel to Princeton University to participate in the Princeton Diplomatic Invitational, a flagship programme of the International Relations Council at Princeton University. The programme simulates real world diplomatic interactions and student delegates from top universities around the world work closely to influence and make policy decisions.
Intersection of Tradition and Technology: Japan
This is a new USP International Programme organised and initiated by USP students. Twelve USP students travel to Japan for this interdisciplinary programme that aims to explore the cross-sections of both the traditions and modern technologies in different fields. Japan as a country is at this very intersection, a country that is steeped in its own traditions and cultures, yet still constantly on the forefront of modern technological breakthroughs and advancements. The programme will bring students through Nagoya and Tokyo, as well as more rural areas such as Suzaka and Kiso Valley.
Inter-Civilisational Dialogue
Seven USP students travel to Istanbul on a programme led by USP faculty Prof Syed Farid Alatas. Themed “Islam and Multiculturalism”, students will participate in university seminars and discussions with faculty and students in the various host/partner institutions, as well as interact with interfaith community groups and leaders.

EPIIC International Symposium
Six USP students will travel to Tufts University to participate in the Education for Public Inquiry and International Citizenship (EPIIC) International Symposium hosted by the Institute for Global Leadership. The topic for this year’s symposium is “Migration in a Turbulent World?” and students will present an issue related to the theme, attend panel discussions and participate in informal gatherings and workshops.

Join The Sessions as they invite US Embassy Singapore Chargé d’Affaires Stephanie Syptak-Ramnath, former US Ambassador to Vietnam Michael Michalak, and USP faculty Dr Quek Ser Hwee for a chat and lively discussion with USP students on US-Singapore relations.

Public Lecture by NAK Distinguished Visiting Professor: The Frigid Gets Hot – Climate Change and Cultural Extinction in the Himalayan Highlands
Hosted and organised by USP, we have Ngee Ann Kongsi Distinguished Visiting Professor Professor Maharaj K. Pandit to share with us on “Climate Change and Cultural Extinction in the Himalayan Highlands”. The Himalaya, also known as the ‘third pole’, harbors the largest glacier mass outside of the two poles. The mountains are under the international media spotlight, for an alarming report predicts a sea level rise of 1.5 meters driven by melting of the Himalayan glaciers. There are also reports about these ice-fields disappearing by 2035. This session will also discuss what does Himalayan warming mean for the sustainability of South and Southeast Asia, and Singapore. NUS Open Day 2019 and Discover USP
NUS Open Day 2019 and Discover USP
We will open our premises to visitors on NUS Open Day 2019. Our USP booth will be located at Chua Thian Poh Hall, and planned activities will happen throughout the day in and around USP. There will be three talk sessions at the nearby UTown Auditorium 3. Two sessions will focus on USP at 11.00am and 2.00pm. The third session at 3.00pm will focus on the NUS-Sciences Po Double Degree Programme. Of notable mentions are five sample classes to be offered by USP professors, spread out between 10.00am – 4.30pm at USP Seminar Room 1, and two Alumni Human Library sessions at Chatterbox at 1.30pm and 4.30pm. Open Day is important to USP and the entire NUS community so let us all welcome visitors enthusiastically on that day. For USP students, do invite/encourage your juniors to visit us!

The QR Centre is hosting a talk by USP faculty Dr Miguel Escobar Varela, entitled “Digital Humanities and The Data-driven Analysis of Indonesian Theatre”. Join this interesting session as Dr Varela shares about his work, offering an exciting look into the application of quantitative tools in the humanities. This includes how methods ranging from network analysis, computational linguistics and geospatial analysis can be used to look at Indonesian theatre from a different angle.

Dialogue on Abusive Relationships
Dialogue on Abusive Relationships
Organised by Love, USP, this dialogue session invites representatives from Brave Spaces, AWARE and PAVE to discuss about abusive relationships – identifying what is abuse, how to provide support, why abusive relationships happen, and the challenges in leaving them. Organisers hoped that this would be a comfortable and safe space to learn and empathise, and to recognise what an abusive relationship is, so that we can move towards building healthy relationships in our lives.

USP Independent Study Modules (ISM) Annual Showcase 2019
ISMs are independent research opportunities to explore a specialised area of interest and an academic requirement for all USP students. Some USP students who have done their ISMs will be sharing their personal experiences and providing practical advice for those who are embarking on an ISM in the form of “Human Library” activity – where a “book” (speaker) and several “readers” (participants) are grouped together, and the former shares information with the latter on a particular topic. Do come and hear what these seniors have to say about the ISM experience!

QR Centre: LaTeX Workshop
The Quantitative Reasoning (QR) Centre is organising a LaTeX workshop. LaTeX (pronounced lah-TECK) is a document writing system widely adopted in many academic fields, to deliver high quality and professional documents in both the sciences and the humanities. Conducted by QR Assistant Lee Ning Yuan, participants will be taken through the basics and other useful techniques to get them immediately started on using LaTeX in their work.

Permaculture@USP Symposium 2019: SustaiNIBBLES
Come and join Permaculture@USP’s inaugural symposium, “SustaiNIBBLES”. The objective of the event is to educate participants about sustainable food production in Singapore, encourage awareness and a sustainable mindset and teach participants how to start a small garden in their homes. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from local niche food producers and experts (among which is Prof Maharaj Pandit, our Ngee Ann Kongsi Distinguished Visiting Professor) who are challenging the notions of sustainable food production and inspiring the next green wave of Singapore food entrepreneurs. There will also be a microgreens workshop for all participants to learn how to produce nutritious food. This event is open to NUS students, staff and public. folio - a Writing and Critical Thinking publication - is officially launching its latest edition (Volume 16). folio is USP’s annual publication featuring some of the best essays produced in USP’s Writing and Critical Thinking modules. Design Thinking Workshop
Design Thinking Workshop
USP alum Zhai Yunjie (Psychology + USP, Class of 2018), currently a Product and User-experience designer, will be conducting a second run of design thinking workshop for the USP community. The workshop will focus on learning a methodology of solving problems and devising solutions to address the needs of the human users. This hands-on session will provide a platform for students to learn, practise, and ask questions about what it really means to use “design thinking”. She will also cover the concept of blockchain and existing problems in this industry that can be solved using design thinking as an approach.
