SUMMARY:Visit to USP: Student Delegation from Chu Kochen Honors College\, Zhejiang University
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by USP\, a group of student delegation from Chu Kochen Honors College\, Zhejiang University will be visiting USP and NUS from 2-4 October 2018. They will be introduced to USP and NUS by attending three sample classes by USP faculty members\, touring around USP and UTown\, and visiting the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum at NUS. \nSample Class 1\nEvolution: Human origins by Dr Hwang Wei Song \nSummary: The evolutionary history of our own human species is currently undergoing major revisions as new discoveries in unexpected localities are made in recent years. This sample class will make use of a comparative morphology approach to gather information using hominid skulls to understand how we can piece together the lives of past and present species. We will examine the connections between morphological form and function and attempt to make phylogenetic inferences given the information gathered. \nSample Class 2\nEngaging and Building Communities by A/P Albert Teo \nSummary: How do we engage and support disadvantaged\, marginalised communities? What are the key outcomes\, strategies and principles of impactful community development? In this session\, we will critically review the principles of community development in the context of addressing the challenges and issues faced by disadvantaged\, marginalised communities. \nSample Class 3\n“Health in Happiness” by Dr Charles Burke \nA valid measure of happiness consists of three principle components\, the logical\, emotional\, and social. Sports too exhibit a combination each of these components and therefore the two are likely to share a positive correlation. The session will conduct data collection exercise where as a group we attempt to validly measure our own health and happiness through a morning of participating in sport.
