Volunteering internationally is rarely just about doing good or being responsible to the “Third World”. USP alum Prof Sin Harng Luh, now working in the NUS Department of Geography, has written critical articles questioning the role of voluntourism in encouraging performed dependencies, and in the inherently biased power structures in the host-volunteer relationships.
