Pastoral Care
“Struggles are inevitable in life. It helps us to grow and allows us to know ourselves better. Navigating through difficult times can be painful but it should not be a lonely process. Know that you are not alone as there is support available around you – your friends, Resident Fellows, Resident Student Support Managers, Resident Assistants, a peer mentor, a professor or lecturer, any NUSC staff or home faculty, or me” – Ms Rachel Lam, NUSC Pastoral Care Manager
Pastoral Care
Pastoral Care
NUS College offers first-line counseling care and support for students experiencing distress in university life, whether psychologically-, emotionally-, physically-, or financially-related. Any NUSC student is able to approach the pastoral care support staff for emotional and psychological support, and to utilize its pastoral resources. Services include weekly office hours for students to drop by for one-to-one counselling sessions or group conversations, and guidance to student interest and residential support groups. The office works closely with NUS University Counselling Services (UCS) and University Health Centre (UHC) for follow up support and care.
Confidentiality
The pastoral care staff abide by a confidentiality policy to create a safe and private space where students can share openly, hence any information you share with the staff will be kept confidential.
Exceptions to this practice are when students give written consent to reveal information, when there is a need to protect you or others from serious harm, or when students are mandated by NUS for assessment.

Reinforcing Pastoral Care in Residence
Home away from Home
Cinnamon College should be a place of safety, support and nurturing – physically as well as emotionally. If you are experiencing any stress, whether personal or academic, please make use of the available support. Approach a friend, or if you need more formal support, there are other options:
Who can you approach?
Not necessarily in this order: your Resident Assistant (RA), or any RA, your or any Residential Fellow (RF), a faculty member in whose class you are, USP pastoral admin, NUS support services. You can make walk-in appointments directly at NUS’s University Counselling Services (UCS). Please see the pocket-size telephone number card for useful contacts.
Preventive Care
If you know or believe that you are at risk (e.g. have eating problems, suffer from depression, are prone to self-harm), please consider telling your RF about this. We have had success in the past with providing preventive support for students who feel fragile and in need of a little extra support.
It's getting too much
Please discuss your options with faculty or an RF. You may take a leave of absence or drop a course. It is NOT failure to change your plans, to change direction, or even to drop out of a course. These are options that allow for short-term stress relief, and prevent an everything or nothing scenario.
Look after yourself
For good physical and mental health, it is important that
- You get enough sleep
- You live a balanced life: get out, meet friends, exercise, or go for walks
- Eat well
Finally, we are planning workshops around issues regarding sexual respect, and will be sending out invitations for applications.
