For contributing to Singapore-China relations, USP Rector Emeritus Prof Wang Gungwu was conferred the Business China Excellence Award at the Business China Awards 2016 held on 22 November 2016. Prof Wang has established himself as an eminent and prolific historian as well as an internationally-renowned pioneer expert on overseas Chinese studies.

The Excellence Award is presented to an outstanding individual who demonstrates exceptional vision and leadership in the development and sustained growth of a business or profession in China or Singapore. The recipient is viewed as an exemplary role model in the learning and appreciation of the Chinese language and culture.

Prof Wang’s award citation says, “As the pioneer in the field of Overseas Chinese Studies, his academic research and studying methods have great impact on researchers who later venture into the field, and strengthened Singapore's position as an independent resource centre on China news and developments."
