Triple Win for USP Student at the ASEAN University Network Educational Forum
USP student Poh Yu Ting (Sociology + USP, Class of 2017) brought home three awards at the recent 16th ASEAN University Network (AUN) and 5th ASEAN+3 Educational Forum and Young Speakers Contest in Bangkok, Thailand.
The programme, held from 8-10 November 2016, was hosted by Mahidol University. Under the theme “Strengthening ASEAN+3 Towards Sustainable Development Through Community Engagement”, the programme provided a platform for discussions, public speaking and academic presentations by students from ASEAN+3 (China, Japan and Korea). Yu Ting and fellow USP student Ong Junyi Joy (Environmental Biology + USP, Class of 2017) participated in the Educational Forum and Young Speakers Contest, respectively.
Yu Ting was awarded the Most Outstanding Delegate for possessing the characteristics of a real diplomat shown through her presentation skills. She also clinched the Most Outstanding Policy Paper award for demonstrating logical and coherent ideas in her policy paper. For the Forum, the 24 delegates from various ASEAN+3 countries were divided into three working groups to come up with unique solutions and policy recommendations to common problems faced by ASEAN+3 countries. Yu Ting’s group won the Most Outstanding Working Group award after she and her groupmates impressed the judges with their excellent speaking and debating skills, and extensive research on land, water and air pollution.
Yu Ting told us how her internship experience helped her excel at the AUN Forum, “My MCCY [Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth] internship provided me with a strong understanding of policy issues, especially when the theme of the Educational Forum coincided with the work that I was doing at the Office for Citizen Engagement. Featuring the idea of co-creation and co-delivery of solutions with citizens, I analysed how our recent policies in the environmental, economic and social spheres have engaged with the community to attain sustainable development.”
We are very proud to have Yu Ting and Joy represent Singapore and NUS. Kudos, ladies!
