USP student Beverly Goh (Law + USP, Class of 2019) together with students from Fudan University formed a team to compete in the 2018 Tsinghua University School of Law International Arbitration Moot. The team emerged first place in the competition.

Currently on student exchange programme at Fudan University, Beverly was selected to represent the University in the competition. Held at Beijing, China, from 27 – 28 April 2018, the competition was organised by Tsinghua University School of Law and supported by the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission. This second edition of the Moot saw 13 top universities in China participating. This year, the teams tackled a moot problem focusing on International Investment Law. Despite the team’s inadequate knowledge on the topic, Beverly’s team researched and prepared well for the competition. They ranked first in the two preliminary rounds and eventually, won the championship in the finals.

On her thoughts about joining the competition, she said, “Other than learning more about International Investment Law – an area that I never thought I would be interested in – I also learnt a lot about China and the Chinese Education from the local students in the team. Also, working with them forced me to speak better and faster Mandarin to explain to them about the arguments and research that we have done. I also helped to correct and improve their English for the mooting competition. Although I missed out on travelling for these weeks (which I will be catching up on), this was, in fact, the best way to really know and understand about China’s culture – by really getting your hands dirty and doing tough work like competing with local students organised by a local university.”
