Two USP alums Dr Li Jingmei (Life Sciences + NOC+ USP, Class of 2006) and Dr Mustafa Izzuddin (Political Science + USP, Class of 2005) were honoured with the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Singapore's Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) 2019 Award for their outstanding achievements in their field of work and contribution to the community.

Held on 3 October 2019, they were awarded the TOYP 2019 Award at the Gala Dinner cum Award Ceremony held at Hotel Jen by Shangri-La. Organised by JCI, the awards seek to recognise individuals between the ages of 18 and 40 who exemplify the best attributes of young people.

Dr Li, a Senior Research Scientist at A*STAR Genome Institute of Singapore, was awarded under the Scientific and Technological Development category for her trailblazing research to improve women’s health, particularly in the area of breast cancer research. Dr Mustafa, a Research Fellow at NUS Institute of South Asian Studies and a USP faculty member, was awarded under the Humanitarian and Voluntary Leadership category. At a tender age of 16, he started volunteering with the Malay Youth Literary Association (4PM) and the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) Council. He continues to volunteer actively with them till today.

Such an inspiration for the younger generation to be curious in thought and be engaged with the community – congrats to both for the well-deserved award!
