UNIVERSITY SCHOLARS PROGRAMMME (USP)
INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMMES
Policies and Procedures (wef 15 September 2010)
- General Application Rules
- The student must have a minimum CAP of 3.5 to apply, with the exception of freshmen in their first semester.
- The applicant must be a current USP student who is working actively towards completing the USP module requirements.
- Applicants cannot be under suspension due to prior demerits from previous International Programmes.
- Applications sent after the deadline will not be accepted.
- Student must apply for the programme via the Event Management System (a USP application portal).
- Incomplete applications will not be considered. Students are advised not to apply last-minute in order to avoid technical problems with the system.
- Selection Process & Criteria
- All students who wish to apply for any USP International Programme are subject to a selection process. It is the responsibility of the student to be aware of all pre-requisites and application deadlines. Selection is based on a written statement pertaining to the topic/issue in question and an interview. Eligible students will be selected by the USP International Programmes Committee, which will comprise the programme director/s, faculty members and/or administrative staff.
- All students applying for a USP International Programme activity should be in good academic standing. Some programmes may require CAP of more than 3.5 or completion of certain pre-requisite modules. While a student's CAP is an important factor in the selection process, meeting the minimum CAP score requirement does not guarantee acceptance into the activity. Freshmen in their first semester will be assessed based on their essay and interview.
- Revocation of Eligibility
- Students who are on academic or disciplinary probation or suspension will not be eligible to apply for, or to participate in, any USP International Programme activity.
- Students who fail to abide by the Code of Conduct (stated below) will be barred from participating in USP International Programme activities for a period of up to one year.
- Students who do not submit the required deliverables on time and in proper order will have to pay back to the USP the subsidy granted towards the trip and will be barred from participating in USP International Programme activities for a period of up to one year.
- Costs & Expenses
All USP International Programme activities are subject to co-payment by USP students. Selected students will pay 1/4 to 1/3 of the total programme costs whilst USP will pay for the remaining costs. Payment not made by the stipulated deadline will result in the student forfeiting their place on the programme.
Included in most programme costs are:
- accommodation
- entry fees to museums, places of interest etc
- return airfare
- basic travel insurance
- costs of internal transportation (bus, train etc) (partial or all)
- meals (partial or all)
Additional and incidental costs generally not included in the cost are:
- passport and visa
- immunizations
- Revocation of Eligibility
- Students are expected to pay for the programme in full two weeks* after the selection results are announced. Late payment may result in dismissal from the programme.
- Students must sign an indemnity form before they embark on any travel.
*Subject to changes; may be shorter depending on nature of that USP International Programme
- Penalty for Withdrawals
Once payment is made, a student’s place in an USP International Programme is formally confirmed. Any withdrawal will be subject to the following penalty:
- If the student withdraws after point of formal confirmation but 30 days* prior to the start of the overseas programme:
- S/he will be liable to forfeit 50% of the co-payment made, or pay 100% of any cancellation charges, whichever is the higher; and
- S/he student will be barred from participating in USP International Programme activities for a period of up to one year.
- If the student withdraws in less than 30 days* prior to the start of the overseas programme:
- S/he will be liable to forfeit 100% of the co-payment made, or pay 100% of any cancellation charges, whichever is the higher; and
- S/he student will be barred from participating in USP International Programme activities for a period of up to one year.
*Subject to changes; may be shorter depending on nature of that USP International Programme
- Student Code of Conduct
- In all USP programmes abroad, participants shall respect the rights of other students, staff, and faculty. Participants are held responsible for university policies. It is a fundamental expectation that students will respect the norms of the host culture with regard to behavior and dress; obey host country laws; participate fully in class work and group excursions; respect the rules and property of programme hosts; and follow the guidance of the programme director.
- Students can be dismissed from programmes for violating policies, rules, or regulations; for engaging in disruptive behaviour; for academic infractions; or for conduct that could bring the programme into disrepute. In addition, the use, purchase, or sale of illegal drugs is prohibited and is considered cause for immediate dismissal. Likewise, the misuse of alcohol will not be tolerated and can result in dismissal. In all such cases, students will be discharged without a refund, and will be asked to pay back any subsidies. The Director of USP will make dismissal judgments on the advice of the USP International Programmes Committee.
