Towards a Unified South-East Asia: The EU as a Model for ASEAN?

Dear USP students,

In early 2007, 4 students decided that it was time for students to take ownership of creating their own Global Programme.  Over the course of 2007, they brainstormed and debated, finally deciding that they wanted to do a Summer Programme to Europe with a theme centered on the study of the European Union and coming back closer to home, the study of ASEAN.

The EU-ASEAN Summer Program is a youth oriented program focusing on primarily on the both the EU & ASEAN structure and studying its possible future implications on an academic level. The idea behind the theme is that we want to study both the EU and ASEAN under various different themes and decide on focus points or issues.  This is especially timely given the signing of the ASEAN Charter in November 2007 and the handover to a new Secretary General. All of us have experienced different USP programmes but feel that up to this point, more can be down to engage in topics related to EU and ASEAN and this programme would also enhance the opportunities within USP as up to now, there is no formal programme to Europe.

What we are going to put forth is a fusion of different types of summer programmes. We are taking the best elements of each summer programme and putting it together for this summer programme. We want ownership in the creation of this Summer Programme. It will be something for USP students by USP students.

We want to open up our team to another 3 individuals who will help in the creation of this Summer Programme. Hopefully, after this, they will take the initiative to create or help in other summer programmes within the USP Community.

Up to this point in time, we have already come up with a preliminary design for the Summer Programme and established contacts with the European Commission in Singapore, the Singapore Institute for International Affairs and other academics on these topics.  We are currently looking at completing this project by this summer.
