The USP Alumni Fund

We, a group of University Scholars Programme (USP) alumni, have gotten together to start the USP Alumni Fund. Having benefited enormously from the USP experience, from the modules we read to the friendships that we formed, we feel that it is time to give a little something back so that current USP students can have the same memories that we have.

A key part of the USP educational experience is participating in the USP Global Programme. Though not an academic requirement, the Global Programme gives students the opportunity “to exercise critical reflection and intellectual leadership outside of the classroom, thereby helping them bridge the gap between their academic studies and the wider world of responsibility and performance”.

Therefore, to help financially needy USP students to pursue a Global Programme activity that would greatly enrich their educational experience, we have set up the USP Alumni Fund. The Fund will provide grants that will help them with part of the cost of undertaking the activity.

USP students applying for funding for other USP-endorsed activities under the USP Student Grant are also eligible to apply for the USP Alumni Grant. Such applicants will have to demonstrate that they have taken the initiative to look for alternative sources of funding in addition to their USP Student Grant application prior to their applying for the USP Alumni Grant.

Who’s Involved

The names of the group of alumni who are involved in establishing and driving the Fund are appended here.

Our Goal

With your support, we have already raised $15,000 by the end of the initial outreach in October 2009. This is a meaningful sum that would allow the Fund to start disbursing grants to up to two students in the Academic Year 2010/2011.

This would also position the fund as an “expendable fund” in that annual disbursements of up to $1,000 could be drawn down on the initial capital raised. Furthermore, gifts from the donors would attract a dollar-for-dollar matching from the Singapore government which would be channelled towards the USP Endowment Fund. We hope to continue to grow the fund over the years.

The USP Alumni Grant

The USP Alumni Fund will provide the USP Alumni Grant to support students pursuing a Global Programme activity. The USP currently subsidises 50% - 75% of the costs of a USP Global Programme activity and a USP student co-pays towards the activity (up to a maximum amount after USP’s subsidy).  The USP Alumni Grant can thus help fund up to 50% of the costs incurred by the student up till a maximum of $1,000.
To be eligible for the Grant, students will need to have a demonstrated financial need, and show that without the Grant they will not be able to embark on the activity. In addition, they will also need to show that they were unable to obtain sufficient forms of financial aid from other sources. This is to ensure that the Fund remains a last resort and will fulfil a real, critical need.

More information on the eligibility and evaluation criteria, as well as the application form, can be found here.
