Logo

The design aims to convey a strong dynamic image that "shouts out" the core purpose of SPAN. The bird's wing as the central image is inspired by the phrase "wing span", playing also on the word "span". Undergraduates are like young fledglings who are learning skills to survive the working world. When the fledglings' wings are strong, sturdy, and wide enough, their ability to fly marks their coming of age - similar to graduates leaving university to make their mark in the world. From the moment they leave the nest, they have to continue flying, reaching for greater heights. The span of the wing has outstretched feathers that symbolise the wide spread of the network. The three largest feathers extend out of the circle, which symbolises venturing into wider global horizons. The S-like shape of the skeletal structure of the wing (in blue) highlights the letter "S", from the first letter of the word "SPAN". As such, the letters "SPAN" are also coloured in the same shade of blue.

The logo uses a tri-colour scheme of red, sky blue, and navy blue. Blue symbolises excellence and high standards, and the changing shades of blue reflect a dynamic progression towards world-class excellence. Red symbolises life and suggests the pulsating, vibrant, dynamic, learning environment in which USP students grow.

Creator of SPAN Logo

The designer of SPAN's logo is Mr Leong Chorng Yee. He graduated with a Bachelor in Engineering in year 2002 and was with the Talent Development Programme during his stint in NUS. His major was Electrical and Computer Engineering. An up-and-coming graduate, he is consistently upgrading his skills in diverse areas. He picked up his designing skills while he was still a student in NUS and had to handle the heavy work load from the Faculty of Engineering. He is currently working as a Territory Manager in ExxonMobil, and is interested in Strategic Business Planning, Risk Management, Regulatory Economics and Electrical Engineering. During his leisure time, he likes to play videogames, Chinese Chess, badminton and go in-line skating. Chorng Yee took about two weeks to get from the initial conceptualisation of the logo to the final drawing using Macromedia Flash MX.
