Created to provide intellectual, leadership, and personal development for highly motivated and talented students at NUS, USP evolved from the university’s two predecessor programmes, the Talent Development Programme (TDP) and the Core Curriculum Programme (CCP).
TDP aimed to train future leaders who sought breadth and excellence in undergraduate studies, and had its first intake in 1996. TDP students were given opportunities to pursue enhanced or specialised courses through independent study and research in chosen fields of study, within their own faculties. In 1999, CCP was launched. Modelled on Harvard’s Core Curriculum Programme, it aimed to provide a broad-based education with an emphasis on writing and critical thinking, and an appreciation of the connections between different disciplines. In July 2001, USP fused these two programmes together and took in her first students.
Officially announced on 19 September 2000, USP was launched the following year in July 2001. The year 2010 marks the tenth anniversary of USP.
From August 2011 onwards, USP offers her students an integrated living and learning experience in the USP residential college located at the NUS University Town.
University Scholars Programme Milestones
The University Scholars Programme milestones aim to capture the organic growth and development of USP as a learning community with a distinct history and perspective. By featuring various landmarks, the milestones detail and pay homage to the different groups of people whose support was integral to the project of shaping USP to grow into what it is today. As USP moves into the next decade in its new home at the USP residential college, the Milestones project hopes to provide a context and grounding for the programme and community to build upon.
