December 2018
We are delighted to share that USP Deputy Director (Student Life), A/P Albert Teo, was presented with the Red Ribbon Award 2018 at the 11th Singapore AIDS Conference. Held on 8 December at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, the award was given in recognition of his volunteer work with people living with HIV over the past 18 years.
USP alum Choo Ruizhi (History + USP, Class of 2017) submitted his short story entry on Facebook for the ‘Utterly changed. The Substation Writing Competition’ and was awarded Third Prize (S$1,000). There was a total of 62 entries for this competition.
November 2018
USP student Natalya Jia Yu Wickramasuriya (Psychology + USP, Class of 2019) was presented the Global Winner award in the Psychology category at the Global Undergraduate Summit for her research paper titled “Development of the Sensitivity to Instructor Criticism Scale (SICS)”.
The OCD Empathy Kit — a final year project by USP alum Desiree Lim (Industrial Design + USP, Class of 2018) — was among the three projects by NUS Design and Environment graduates selected from more than a thousand applications to be featured at this year’s Global Grad Show in Dubai from 13 to 17 November.

Two USP alums have been shortlisted for this year's Epigram Books Fiction Prize (EBFP). They are:
May Seah (English Literature + USP, Class of 2008), senior digital lifestyle journalist at Channel NewsAsiaLu Huiyi (English Literature + USP, Class of 2013), pursuing a post-graduate course in Singapore Management University
Two USP students Kee Qian Ling (Engineering Science Programme + USP, Class of 2022) and Chang Jing Wen Celeste (BIZ + USP, Class of 2022) are among the six recipients of the new NUS bond-free Stephen Riady Young Entrepreneur Scholarship.
USP alum Jonathan Low (Electrical Engineering + USP, Class of 2013), co-founder of honestbee, and his team have launched habitat by honestbee – a supermarket, restaurant and retail innovation lab all in one – on 16 October.
September 2018
USP student Woo Qiyun (Environmental Geography + USP, Class of 2020) was recognised at the HSBC/National Youth Achievement Awards 2018 ceremony on 21 September for her outstanding leadership and contributions to the environment.
Two USP faculty members, Assoc Prof Lo Mun Hou and Dr Edmund Low, received the NUS Annual Teaching Excellence Awards (ATEA) for Academic Year 2016/2017 on 28 September.
We are extremely proud of two members of our USP community for receiving recognition at the Singapore Accountancy Awards 2018.
Four USP students impressed the judges at the inaugural NUS Law-WongPartnership LegalTech Competition which took place over two weeks, from 31 August – 14 September. They were in the team that clinched the first prize.

Three USP alums have been placed in this year's The Vanguards: 2018 Prestige 40 Under 40 – Titans list, unveiled in August. They are:
Tin Pei Ling (Psychology + USP, Class of 2007), Muhammad Shamir Bin Abdul Rahim (Life Sciences + USP, Class of 2007) and Kelvin Teo (Accountancy + USP, Class of 2010).
Five USP-Law students impressed at the annual Asia Law Students’ Association International Moot Court Competition (AIMCC) 2018 held in Myanmar from 24 – 28 August. They were in the teams that emerged Champion and First Runner-up.

USP alum Nur Safiah Alias (Communications and New Media + USP, Class of 2014) was part of the “Who Cares? Transforming the Caregiving Experience for Singaporeans” project that won Design of the Year at the 2018 President*s Design Award (P*DA). Held on 17 July at the Istana, the Award was jointly handed out by the Urban Redevelopment Authority and DesignSingapore Council.
USP alum Amutha Saravanan (Psychology + USP, Class of 2007) was among 14 outstanding women entrepreneurs honoured at the Women Entrepreneur Awards (WEA) 2018 on 11 July at The Ritz-Carlton Millenia.
Congratulations to USP Rector Emeritus Ms Euleen Goh for being named one of the best in corporate governance in Singapore! The Chairman of SATS Ltd was awarded Gold for Best Managed Board of a listed company with S$1 billion and above in market capitalisation at the Singapore Corporate Awards (SCA) 2018.
USP alum Christopher Chok (History + USP, Class of 2014) has been awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarship 2018 to pursue a Masters in Religion and Society at Durham University. He was presented this Scholarship at a ceremony on 31 July.
We presented the USP Prizes, Joanna Wong Gold Medal Award and Sung Kah Kay Memorial Prize at the USP Commencement Dinner held on 21 July at the Le Meridien Singapore, Sentosa.
USP alum Feng Yuanqiu (Architecture + USP, Class of 2014) was recently awarded the Barbour Scholarship by the University of Michigan Rackham Graduate School for Academic Year 2018/19. Another USP alum Tiffany Chuang May (Sociology + USP, Class of 2011) was also a recipient of the scholarship for Academic Year 2017/18.

Four USP alums have been placed in this year's Singapore Tatler's Generation T (Gen.T) List, unveiled this month.
April 2018
USP student Beverly Goh (Law + USP, Class of 2019) together with students from Fudan University formed a team to compete in the 2018 Tsinghua University School of Law International Arbitration Moot. The team emerged first place in the competition.

USP alum Jackie Tan Yen (Life Sciences + USP, Class of 2012), the Co-founder of fundMyLife, has been placed in the prestigious Forbes “30 Under 30 Asia” 2018 list under the Finance and Venture Capital category.
USP student Teoh Xin Yi (FASS + USP, Class of 2021) won the second prize in The New York Times Asia-Pacific Writing Competition 2017, under the tertiary category.

The NUS Student Achievement Awards (SAA) organised annually by the NUS Office of Student Affairs recognises exceptional individual students or student organisations for their noteworthy contributions to the University in areas outside the academic curriculum. This year, Camp REConnection III was awarded Silver under the Community Projects (Group) category.
Two USP students Annina Zhang (Economics + USP, Class of 2021) and Isabella Tan (Law + USP, Class of 2021) was commended for their outstanding performances with Honorable Mentions at this year’s Princeton Diplomatic Invitational (PDI) at Princeton University, USA.

USP alumni Betty Tsai (Chemical Engineering + USP, Class of 2012) and Mohamed Fairoz bin Ahmad (Sociology + USP, Class of 2006) were honoured with the prestigious NUS Outstanding Young Alumni Award 2017.

USP alum Dr Li Jingmei (Life Sciences + USP, Class of 2006) was among 10 women trailblazers honoured by The Singapore Women’s Weekly magazine in its annual Great Women Of Our Time Awards.

USP alum Kia Jie Hui (BIZ + USP, Class of 2011), co-founder of Save That Pen project, was awarded this year’s National Environment Agency (NEA)’s EcoFriend Award under the Non-Government Organisations and Grassroots Volunteers category for her effort and contribution to protecting the environment.

USP students Moh Su Jin (BIZ + USP, Class of 2019) and Keane Looi Yi Xian (Computing + USP, Class of 2019) participated in the NUS Medical Grand Challenge. Su Jin's team won the Change Maker Prize for the most creative and impactful project while Keane's team won the People's Choice Award for the most popular project.

Three USP students together with a Chemical Engineering student formed a team to compete in this year’s Sembcorp-EMA Energy Challenge (SEEC). The team managed to clinch second runner-up position under the University category in the competition.

Two USP students together with two Law students formed a team to compete in the inaugural Asia-Pacific Commercial Mediation Competition. The team came first in the competition.

USP students contributed much to the success of the recent 17th ASEAN University Network (AUN) and 6th ASEAN+3 Educational Forum and Young Speakers Contest. Held from 22-26 May 2017 at USP, the event provided a platform for discussions, public speaking and academic presentations by some 50 students from ASEAN+3 (China, Japan and the Republic of Korea) countries. A group of USP students represented NUS in either participating or organising the event.

Two USP students Woo Qiyun (Political Science + USP, Class of 2020) and Cheok Jia Ying (Computing + USP, Class of 2020) brought home an award each after participating in this year’s Princeton Interactive Crisis Simulation (PICSim) at Princeton University, USA.
USP student Cassandra Pee Xue Yi (Political Science + USP, Class of 2019) has received the Bronze award under the Leadership category at the NUS Student Achievement Awards (SAA) 2017 organised by NUS Office of Student Affairs.
USP alum Betty Tsai (Chemical Engineering + USP, Class of 2012) has gained a place in the Asian Scientist 100 list 2017 edition. To gain a spot on the list, the honoree must have received a national or international prize in the last two years for his or her scientific research through competitive selection, made a significant contribution in scientific discovery, or displayed leadership that has benefitted either academia or industry.

USP student Low Joo Tat (Industrial Design + USP, Class of 2017) and fellow Industrial Design students formed Team Duktig to take part in a joint collaboration workshop (organised by SPACE10 in collaboration with NUS Enterprise and IKEA Singapore) during which they won an all-expense-paid trip to Scandinavia, Sweden.

USP alum Prasatt Arumugam (English Literature + USP, Class of 2016) is one of 4,862 people in the world and the FIRST Singaporean to complete the 4,280km-long Pacific Crest Trail (PCT).
In PM Lee Hsien Loong’s New Year message delivered on 31 December 2016, he spoke about USP alum Muhammad Shamir Bin Abdul Rahim (Life Sciences + USP, Class of 2007) who started out as a molecular biologist and launched his own start-up at NUS Enterprise's Blk71.
In her final year of undergraduate studies, USP alum Li Yanzhe (Pharmacy + USP, Class of 2016) was awarded with NUS Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Prize (OURP) 2015/2016 under Individual category for her project titled, “Safety and Efficacy of Immuno-privileged Cord Lining Epithelial Cells For Cutaneous Wound Repair – A Pilot in vivo Study”.
Four USP students brought home an award each after participating in the 14th Annual English Festival at Shantou University 2-4 December 2016.

USP alum Betty Tsai (Chemical Engineering + USP, Class of 2012) was honoured with the Young Chemical Engineer in Industry Award by the Institution of Chemical Engineers’ (IChemE) in Singapore, sponsored by Shell.

For contributing to Singapore-China relations, USP Rector Emeritus Prof Wang Gungwu was conferred the Business China Excellence Award at the Business China Awards 2016 held on 22 November 2016. Prof Wang has established himself as an eminent and prolific historian as well as an internationally-renowned pioneer expert on overseas Chinese studies.
USP fellow Prof Lim Chwee Teck and two NUS Engineering professors were conferred the ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Awards 2016 at the 34th Conference of ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (CAFEO 34) held from 20-24 November 2016 in Manila, the Philippines.
USP alum Muhammad Nadjad bin Abdul Rahim (Life Sciences + USP, Class of 2014) spearheaded a book project, Brani: Memories of an Island, with a team of volunteers who wanted to uncover more about life on the unknown island of Singapore.
USP student Poh Yu Ting (Sociology + USP, Class of 2017) brought home three awards at the recent 16th ASEAN University Network (AUN) and 5th ASEAN+3 Educational Forum and Young Speakers Contest in Bangkok, Thailand.
USP alum Muhammad Shamir Bin Abdul Rahim (Life Sciences + USP, Class of 2007) was honoured with the prestigious award of “Young Entrepreneur of the Year” by the Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SMCCI).
USP fellow Prof Philip Holden launches his debut fiction collection, Heaven Has Eyes – a collection of stories that studies estrangement, interconnection and belonging in Singapore. The 12 short stories are linked by their characters’ discovery of moments of transcendence in everyday life.
Two USP alums, Lim Hui Min Jan (Architecture + USP, Class of 2009) and Muhammad Ibnur Rashad (Engineering Science + USP, Class of 2011), have contributed to the creation of Designing with People and Not Just for People: A Publication by P!D book, which was launched recently on 27 October 2016.
USP student Amanda Ng Ren Hui (Life Sciences + USP, Class of 2019) and three Special Programme in Science (SPS) students formed Team KiasuNUSPS to compete in the International Natural Science Tournament (INST) 2016 and emerged as champions.

Two teams consisting of USP and NUS students – The Glass Half Full and iChange – clinched Top 5 in the Crossing the Chasm Challenge 2016. More impressively, iChange won the grand prize of S$12,000 from Tanoto Foundation!

Six members of the USP community have contributed to the creation of The Birthday Book: What is Singapore's Next Big Thing? (Ethos Books, 2016).
USP fellow Prof Lim Chwee Teck, co-founder of Clearbridge mFluidics, and his team of NUS researchers have developed a cell-capturing microfluidic chip that could pave the way for more personalised medicine when treating cancer patients.
Five USP students on our Double Degree Programme with the School of International Liberal Studies (SILS), Waseda University have just graduated top of the class and received recognition for their academic achievements.
USP alum Veerappan Swaminathan (Mechanical Engineering + USP, Class of 2011), founder of Repair Kopitiam and director of social enterprise Sustainable Living Lab, received recognition at this year’s EcoFriend Awards for conducting upcycling (the reuse of discarded objects or material) and environmental education workshops.
Two USP students and three Computing students formed a team to compete in the API World Hackathon 2016 and won the grand prize of US$10,000 from SAP Hybris, one of the largest sponsors for the challenge.
Three USP students and one NUS student formed a team to compete in the Facebook Singapore Hackathon 2016 and won with their TombBook idea.
